As more businesses use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to support daily operations, more and more restaurants are also adopting it as part of their overall business strategy. This is primarily due to rising costs, changing consumer behavior, and staffing difficulties, all of which have led operators to seek ways to cut costs and improve profitability.

Reports released by the National Restaurant Association (NRA) and other industry analysts and organizations indicate that an overwhelming number of restaurant owners and operators are now using AI technology in their business processes.

This integration enables restaurants to change how they operate across marketing, ordering, staffing, and inventory management. Most industry research suggests that roughly 69 percent of restaurants currently use AI tools in some capacity, and many more are increasing their commitment to automated and digital consumer engagement as they work to remain competitive in a constrained consumer-spending environment.

This surge in adoption is being driven by a combination of operational urgency and evolving guest expectations. As customers expect faster service, individualization, and hassle-free digital connections, AI has become an integral driver across both the front and back ends of restaurants.

For example, through predictive demand forecasting and customer intelligence systems, AI enables operators to base their decisions on more accurate, real-time information by leveraging vast amounts of historical data.

Operators are finding AI especially helpful to optimize labor schedules, reduce food waste, and enhance order precision—all three areas that affect profitability in an industry with tight margins. By leveraging weather forecasts, historical records, and local supply/demand statistics, intelligent systems can help operators predict traffic and staffing with much greater precision, thereby reducing inefficiencies and uncertainty in their operations. As a result, operators will make better decisions for their businesses.

AI is changing the way restaurant owners/designers create customer experiences. Restaurant operators can now use AI-powered tools to develop personalized offers, rewards, and menu suggestions to better meet the individual needs of guests and build relationships that lead to repeat visits. As consumer spending on dining out becomes more variable, the ability to deliver a personalized experience through targeted engagement solutions is paramount for driving consistent foot traffic and building long-term brand loyalty for today’s operators.

In addition to customer-facing operations, restaurants are using AI for supply chain management and kitchen operations. With advanced analytics capabilities, restaurants can measure inventory usage trends, predict shortages, and automate purchasing decisions, helping minimize waste and manage costs — essential goals for many worldwide restaurant operators as they navigate an environment of inflation and supply chain instability.

All in all, the purpose of AI-enabled applications is to relieve employees of time-consuming, repetitive administrative duties and let them devote more time to providing high-quality services and interacting with customers, without fully automating the dining process.

The adoption rate is increasing as the food service industry undergoes a broader digital transformation, shifting the perception of technology from an optional enhancement to a necessary foundational infrastructure. The economy has put pressure on operators to be efficient and guest-friendly, and positioned AI at the centre of how restaurants will be successful, scalable, and differentiated, while preparing for future operations.

As the restaurant industry continues to change and develop, so too will the rate of AI integration within operations, with operators utilizing technology as their primary competitive edge, not only as an experimental method.
