Sweetgreen, the fast-casual salad chain known for popularising healthy, seasonal bowls across the U.S., announced that co-founder and Chief Brand Officer Nathaniel Ru will retire from his executive role effective January 1, 2026, after 20 years with the company. Ru will remain involved as a member of Sweetgreen’s board of directors.

Ru co-founded Sweetgreen in 2006 alongside CEO Jonathan Neman while they were students, building the brand from a single Georgetown University-area location into a publicly traded company with more than 280 restaurants in over 150 cities. During his tenure, he helped define Sweetgreen’s cultural identity and brand voice.

In a statement reflecting on his career, Ru said his original mission, ā€œto create a place where healthy, sustainable food was accessible to allā€, had evolved into something far larger and more impactful than he ever imagined. Under his leadership, Sweetgreen partnered with hundreds of farmers nationwide, collaborated with chefs, athletes and artists, and served more than 300 million meals.

As Chief Brand Officer, Ru oversaw numerous high-profile initiatives, including:

  • Cultural and food collaborations that connected Sweetgreen with broader lifestyle and social movements
  • National marketing campaigns and grassroots local engagement efforts
  • Community education programs such as Sweetgreen in Schools
  • The Sweetlife music and food festival, an annual event blending food, culture and community.

His leadership earned industry recognition, including being named one of Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business and appearing on Forbes’ Next 50 Chief Marketing Officers list.

Following Ru’s retirement, Zipporah Allen, who joined Sweetgreen as Chief Commercial Officer in September, has assumed his responsibilities overseeing brand and related growth functions. Allen brings experience from previous roles including Chief Business Officer and Chief Marketing Officer at Strava, as well as senior marketing positions with global brands such as Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and McDonald’s.

CEO Jonathan Neman praised Ru’s steadfast partnership in building the company’s mission, noting the rarity of sustaining a co-founder’s involvement over two decades and expressing gratitude that Ru will continue contributing at the board level.

Nathaniel Ru’s retirement marks the end of a defining chapter for Sweetgreen. As one of the architects of a brand that helped elevate healthy fast casual into mainstream dining, his departure comes at a moment of mixed performance for the company, with recent stock volatility and strategic pivots underscoring the challenges of scaling purpose-driven concepts in a competitive landscape. Eyeing the future, Sweetgreen’s ability to sustain its mission while adapting to shifting consumer preferences and financial pressures will be essential, and the baton now passes to a new generation of leaders like Zipporah Allen to carry that legacy forward.
