Indiaās leading food delivery platforms, Zomato and Swiggy, have introduced new health-focused ratings aimed at encouraging consumers to make healthier meal choices. The move comes amid growing scrutiny from regulators and consumers over food quality, hygiene, and nutritional transparency in the online food ecosystem.
Zomato has rolled out āHealth Scoresā, an indicator reflecting a dishās nutritional content, while Swiggy is introducing āProtein Dropsā, which highlight meals with higher protein content and balanced nutritional value. Both systems use a combination of verified restaurant input and platform data analytics to assign ratings, enabling consumers to quickly identify healthier options.
The platforms have stated that these features are initially available across select metropolitan cities and will expand gradually to Tier II and Tier III markets as adoption increases. The initiative aligns with Indiaās increasing focus on health-conscious eating and transparency in the $45.15 billion (2024) online food delivery market.
For restaurants, this represents both a challenge and an opportunity. Establishments now have a tangible incentive to revise menu offerings, highlight nutritional content, and optimize recipes for balanced diets. Early adoption may also serve as a marketing edge, signaling a commitment to health and quality to consumers increasingly conscious of dietary choices.
Experts note that health ratings could also influence delivery platform algorithms, potentially impacting visibility and order volumes for restaurants with higher scores. This is particularly relevant for cloud kitchens and multi-brand outlets that rely heavily on app discovery.
