At The Food XP 2025 event, FSSAI CEO Rajit Punhani laid out a roadmap aimed at transforming India’s food retail sector with three pillars: trust, transparency, and innovation. He emphasized that healthy food is not just a policy goal but a social imperative, summing it up with the mantra “Yatha Annam Tatha Manan” (“as is the food, so is the mind”).

Punhani noted that today’s customers demand more than affordability and convenience. Their priorities now include provenance, authenticity, and a connection to how food is made. According to him, as noted by ET Hospitality:

“Grocery shelves and dining tables are no longer separate destinations; they are part of the same consumer journey.”

He pointed out that sourcing, certification, and traceability have moved from backroom compliance to front-of-mind concerns. Digital supply chains, accurate labeling, and public awareness campaigns like ‘Har Label Kuch Kehta Hai’ are central to FSSAI’s strategy.

With online platforms, D2C brands, and marketplaces growing fast, Punhani sees regulatory action no longer just about safety, it’s about safeguarding consumer trust. Mistakes, misinformation or safety lapses can severely damage brand loyalty. He urged retailers, startups, and tech innovators to see compliance as an opportunity to lead, not a burden.

Partnerships and collaborations are expected to multiply as foodservice, retail, and food technology players align on food safety, standards, and traceability. FSSAI plans to support this through frameworks that reward innovation and ensure accountability.

Why This Matters for the F&B & Retail Sectors:

  • Brand risk & reward: Brands that get traceability, labeling, and food safety right can leverage them as differentiators in a crowded market.
  • Operational adjustments: Retailers and restaurateurs will need to invest in backend tools (inventory tracking, supplier audits, digital traceability) more than ever.
  • Regulatory alignment: As consumer behavior evolves, regulation tends to follow. Early adopters of transparency and innovation are likely to benefit from favorable policies and consumer trust.

FSSAI’s renewed vision signals a future where every bite of food sold in India carries not just flavor, but trust, integrity, and innovation.
