Chipotle Mexican Grill has officially entered Asia, opening its first restaurant on the continent in Seoul, South Korea, as the U.S. fast-casual chain begins what it sees as a potentially significant new phase of international growth.

The restaurant opened on September 2, 2026, at 423 Gangnam-daero in Seocho-gu, near Seoul’s Gangnam district. The opening is being positioned as more than a single international launch: Chipotle plans to use South Korea as a reference market for future expansion across Asia, testing how its food, operating model and brand proposition translate to the region.

“Asia represents a significant growth opportunity for Chipotle, with strong demand for variety, convenience and real food prepared fresh and served fast,” said Scott Boatwright, CEO of Chipotle. He added that South Korea is an ideal market for introducing the brand to the region and that the company sees “tremendous potential to grow from here.”

Chipotle selected South Korea because of what it described as the country’s highly engaged and discerning consumers, sophisticated restaurant culture and appreciation for authenticity and ingredient quality. The company sees the market as an opportunity to demonstrate how its Food with Integrity principles and culinary approach can resonate with Asian consumers.

The Seoul restaurant is being operated through S&C Restaurants Holdings Pte. Ltd., a joint venture established between Chipotle and South Korea-based Sangmidang Holdings, formerly known as SPC Group. Sangmidang’s affiliated restaurant operator, Big Bite Company, is responsible for operating Chipotle in the market.

The partnership gives Chipotle access to a local operator with extensive experience bringing international restaurant brands into South Korea.

Sangmidang Holdings has more than 80 years of history in the food business and owns around 30 brands, including Paris Baguette, Paris Croissant, Passion 5, Coffee@Works and StrEAT. Across its businesses, the group operates approximately 7,000 locations worldwide.

It has also previously introduced global brands including Baskin-Robbins, Dunkin’, Pascucci, LINA’S, Jamba and Shake Shack to the South Korean market.

That experience is expected to be important as Chipotle seeks to preserve its brand standards while operating through a local joint-venture structure.
