Mumbai’s Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food licence of Café Mondegar, the long-running restaurant in Colaba, after an inspection identified deficiencies in food safety, hygiene and kitchen infrastructure.
The inspection took place on September 12. According to a report by Hindustan Times, officials found inadequate drainage near the food preparation area, creating a risk of cross-contamination. They also flagged equipment that was not being properly cleaned and sanitised, as well as flooring damaged by dampness.
Inspectors also reported temperature-control issues. Hot food was not being held above 60°C, while cold storage was not being maintained below 5°C. Other reported concerns included improper thawing and slow cooling of food.
The suspension forms part of a wider food-safety enforcement drive in Mumbai ahead of the festive season. Reports said the FDA also suspended licences of other food establishments following inspections, including eateries and food businesses beyond Café Mondegar.
