Sweetgreen has appointed its first-ever Chief Strategy Officer, a move that signals how rapidly restaurant leadership structures are evolving as brands navigate AI integration, operational complexity, and long-term growth planning.
The company has named Cindy Olsen to the newly created role, where she will oversee enterprise strategy, growth initiatives, operational transformation, and strategic innovation across the business.
The appointment marks a notable shift for the fast-casual chain, which has increasingly positioned itself as both a restaurant brand and a technology-driven food platform.
The company has spent recent years investing heavily in automation, supply chain optimization, menu innovation, and digital infrastructure. Its acquisition of restaurant robotics startup Spyce and rollout of automated Infinite Kitchen formats positioned Sweetgreen as one of the most technology-forward brands in fast casual.
That strategy has attracted significant industry attention.
As labor shortages, rising wage pressures, and throughput challenges continue affecting restaurant operations globally, automation and AI are increasingly viewed as strategic necessities rather than experimental investments. Restaurant operators are now exploring how technology can improve speed, consistency, labor productivity, forecasting, and customer personalization without compromising hospitality.
Sweetgreen has been among the more aggressive players in that transition.
The company’s digital-first operating model, app ecosystem, and automated production initiatives have helped it stand apart within the premium fast-casual category, particularly among younger urban consumers. But scaling those systems sustainably requires long-term strategic alignment across technology, operations, real estate, and customer experience.
That is where the new role becomes important.
