Marriott International expects India to become its third-largest global market within the next three to four years, overtaking Mexico and China as the hotel group accelerates expansion beyond the country’s biggest metropolitan areas.

Marriott President and CEO Anthony Capuan told ET HospitalityWorld that India has become one of the company’s most important growth markets, with more than 200 hotels and over 30,000 rooms in the development pipeline.

The U.S. is currently Marriott’s largest market, followed by China, Mexico and India. Capuano said the company expects India to move ahead of both China and Mexico as its expansion pipeline comes online.

“I would guess that in probably the next three or four years, India will be our third-largest market, and we have no intention of slowing down,” Capuano said.
