Potbelly Sandwich Shop has promoted longtime COO Adam Noyes to the role of President, effective immediately, while current CEO Bob Wright will continue leading the chain through the end of the year.

The leadership shuffle comes on the heels of RaceTrac’s US$566 million acquisition of Potbelly, a move that signals more expansive growth ambitions for the sandwich brand. As part of the deal, Potbelly will operate as a standalone brand, with access to RaceTrac’s real-estate engine, franchise infrastructure, and cross-channel distribution networks.

Wright said, as stated in The Restaurant Dive, that with RaceTrac’s backing, the company is “positioned to accelerate growth toward 2,000-plus shops while staying true to our mission of delighting customers with great food and good vibes.”

Noyes brings more than five years of leadership at Potbelly, where he served in operations and growth roles before stepping into the COO seat. In his new capacity as President, his remit will likely encompass franchise expansion, new-format development, operational scalability, and integration of Potbelly’s restaurant systems with RaceTrac’s broader platform.

For franchisees and industry observers, this suggests:

  • A more aggressive rollout pipeline, anchored by the growth capabilities of RaceTrac’s network.
  • Focused investment in operations, brand positioning, and turnkey expansion solutions.
  • Continuity in leadership that mitigates disruption: Wright remaining through year-end helps maintain strategic stability.

Potbelly’s leadership transition underlines an important trend in the restaurant sector: legacy chains being revitalized through strategic acquisition and leadership re-engineering. The move places operational discipline and growth-orientation at the center of the equation.
