McDonald’s is strengthening its U.S. operations leadership, promoting longtime executive Patrick Gerber to Chief Restaurant Officer of McDonald’s USA as the company looks to improve execution across its largest market.

Gerber will join the McDonald’s USA leadership team on September 1, 2026, according to Restaurant Dive. He previously served as Senior Vice President and Chief Restaurant Officer for McDonald’s U.K. and Ireland, and brings more than 25 years with McDonald’s across multiple markets.

His career with the company began at restaurant level as a crew member in Switzerland before moving through leadership positions in operations. He has also served as Senior Director of National Operations for McDonald’s Canada and Field Vice President for Eastern Canada, giving him experience across both frontline restaurant operations and large-scale market leadership.

McDonald’s USA President Skye Anderson said Gerber’s breadth of experience makes him particularly suited to the role at a critical point for the U.S. business.

“[Gerber’s] experience in the System makes him uniquely suited to lead our Operations function at a critical time: he knows first-hand how restaurants run and what it takes to get it right for restaurant teams and customers alike.”

Gerber’s mandate will center on translating McDonald’s strategy into consistent execution across the U.S. restaurant system. That includes strengthening operating standards and improving the connection between corporate priorities and what restaurant teams deliver every day.

The timing is significant.

McDonald’s has recently acknowledged execution challenges in the U.S. business following a weaker second quarter. U.S. comparable sales increased just 0.8%, below expectations, while management pointed to operational complexity created by a crowded promotional calendar and multiple menu launches being introduced close together. CEO Chris Kempczinski said the company did not have a strategy problem, but had failed to execute at the required level during the quarter.

That puts restaurant operations at the center of McDonald’s current turnaround agenda.

Gerber will be tasked with supporting the company’s McDonald’s > NEXT strategy, which emphasizes improvements in food quality and taste, hospitality and customer service. Restaurant Dive reported that his role could include developing and implementing operational improvements designed to raise standards across the system.
